the aftermath After the explosion, the aurors evacuate Felix Felicis. There are only a handful of civilian injuries, mostly incurred in the panic following the explosion. No casino staff were harmed in the break-in; the vault had been emptied as requested and wasn’t even guarded at the time of the incident. Nothing is missing from the vault, casino, or hotel.

Teagan, Keeley, Astrid, and Everett are all taken to Eshmun Extramundane to have their injuries looked at. Keeley’s injured shoulder is healed on the spot, but leaves a nasty scar behind. Astrid suffers a mild concussion, while Everett has a bad shoulder sprain. These injuries are all relatively minor compared to Teagan, who is rushed to the poisons & potions ward. He’s been afflicted by a rare poison derived from the vitreous humor of a basilisk, and it takes all night and several specialists to get him out of the woods. Once morning rolls around, he’s still feeling stiff and sore, but he’s discharged that afternoon.

By the time he returns to the office, the mad scramble has begun. There’s no formal debrief today — only colleagues sharing information in hushed and urgent whispers. Everyone is focused on their own spheres of disaster control:

the abducation of ava canny Not a hair has been scene of the widow Ava Canny since her disappearance. No ransom demands have been made, although as she doesn’t have any living relatives it’s unclear who this demand would be made of in the first place. The department’s point of contact on this case is Hazelle Harwood, Ava’s longtime assistant and the executor of the Canny estate. Ava’s considerable riches are set to go to a variety of charities in the event of her death, and she had altered her will just a week before halloween. The two organizations most impacted by these changes were the Makepeace Foundation (which now stands to inherit the majority of her wealth) and the National Archive (which has lost the majority of its share of the inheritance).

The captured assailant, dressed in black robes identical to those worn by the figures Teagan saw on the roof, is tight-lipped and borderline hysterical, getting more agitated and less helpful every hour he’s kept in the interrogation room. Astrid Weird and [Volunteer B] play a good cop/bad cop routine as they interrogate him. They can ask five questions total of the suspect.

the third vessel This egg is identical to each other egg the department has identified. The documentation provided by the buyer and seller confirm that it is, in fact, a third egg; its whereabouts are well accounted for over the years. Like the second egg, this one is a puzzle box that opens when cracked against a hard surface. The silver capsule inside is of a difference size and weight to the last egg. With permission from the National Archive and the help of [Volunteer C], X Quintana opens the capsules to examine their contents.

The first capsule contains approximately 5ml of human blood, magically preserved. The second capsule contains a desiccated piece of human flesh, alchemically preserved. Both samples are quite small, meaning that only so many tests could be run on each before the sample was destroyed. Erring on the side of caution, X does little more than magically date them before she returns them to their capsule enclosures. She determines that both samples were taken in approximately 1600 AD, give or take fifty years. [Volunteer C] may also run one test on the blood and the skin.

fallout at felix felicis The break-in has left the casino on high alert, and a detail of several Crowbar aurors is assigned to the premises at all times. They have their choice of posing as bartenders, croupiers, security guards, or casino patrons. Everyone has at least three shifts working at Felix Felicis in the next two weeks. These volunteer events can happen any time during that period, at your discretion:

🎲 While posing as a high-rolling casino patron, [Volunteer D] makes an impression on Liberatore Rubio. After a few encounters at the casino, he asks them to give him a small loan of 150,000 dragots, which he claims he desperately needs. He promises to pay the loan back, but is dodgy about what the money is needed for.

🎲 Eleanor Oddtree invites [Journeyman Volunteer E] to have brunch with her at the Beginner’s Luck Café. After an usual amount of catch-up and pleasantries, she gives them a special assignment: track down the potioneer who concocted the poison Teagan was dosed with. Success at this task would certainly mean a promotion shortly down the line.

🎲 While posing as a casino-goer and a blackjack dealer respectively, [Volunteer F] and [Volunteer G] catch a notorious card-counter in the act. Felix Felicis’s head of security, Arthur Free, promises to cash in a favor for them in future (and gives them a hefty stack of house money to gamble with for the remainder of the day).

🎲 On their bartending shift, Sloan Silversmith runs into Hiro Hunter when the thief attempts to swipe a bottle of liquor while nobody’s looking. Hiro pegs them as one of the Crowbar aurors immediately, and Sloan Silversmith is able to get them to answer a couple questions in exchange for letting them walk.

🎲 Plenty of patrons regard the croupiers at Felix Felicis as part of the furniture, and this works to [Volunteer I]’s advantage when they overhear a conversation between two tipsy middle-aged women talking about how much fuss is being made over decorative eggs these days. One of them heard a rumor that someone staying at the Bellagio is trying to buy one for an exorbitant price.

🎲 The party-going Pahlke siblings pick a bad day to let loose at the bar, because two aurors happen to be on duty as bouncers. [Volunteer J] first ejects Perseus from the casino for being underaged. He offers them a hundred dragots if they let him keep his fake ID, which purports he’s 34 years old. Later in the evening, [Volunteer K] kicks Persefani out for drinking too much. Before she leaves, she vomits on their shoes in a retaliatory fashion.

Astrid settles neatly into the good cop role, all warm smiles and maternal energy. She seems to grow calmer the more agitated their interviewee becomes, full of reassurances that, yes, this must be very stressful, but you know, this could all be so much easier for him with just a bit of information.

"They just left you," she says, punctuating a retelling of the night's events as she understands them. "Ran off with the goods, and who knows whether they'll take you back after this. Took off with Miss Canny? They're going to--what? Sacrifice her?"

"Helloooo," Sloan sing songs at Hiro. "That's some good stuff you got there. You know, the bottle you're trying to swipe there. Mix it with some cherry juice sometime. But like, maybe don't steal it then." He drops his elbows to the bar and his chin into his palms. "Hate to see you get arrested again... Maybe we could make some kind of arrangement? Like, maybe I can pretend I didn't see nothing and you could tell me some interesting facts. About eggs. Fancy eggs." He tilts his head thoughtfully. "If you wanted to get in contact with the people that hired you for that last egg job, how might you go about that?"
